Learning how to 3D print a custom Motorcycle Part

My friend Andi has asked me to 3D print a custom motorcycle part for his BSA chopper. He often goes to swap meets where he also found this old lamp that fits perfectly for his BSA custom bike project. The only problem was, he only had the front half of the lamp. And, since it very old he couldn’t just buy the missing piece.

Andi builds a lot of custom motorcycles and is a very skilled craftsmen. You can check out all of his projects on his YouTube channel. This part however was so complex that it would have been hard to build it from metal. So, he asked me if I could try 3D printing it.

I have learned a lot during the process. How to use a picture in Fusion360 as a reference to get very precise dimensions, how to use the loft function to create complex shapes, and how to design a working motorcycle part from scratch.

Check out the video to see how it went!

I have said it before and I’ll say it again. The 3D printer has been one of the best tools I got for my workshop. I am so amazed by how quickly you can design and 3D print a custom motorcycle part.

I just upgraded to a PEI build plate and have improved all printer settings to get very reliable print results. Here is a step by step tutorial for how to set up your 3D printer properly. I had to redo and improve all of the settings because my start with 3D printing wasn’t that easy and I skipped quite a few essential steps. Read this post next, to see how that went.

Have a great day!
Joshua
