custom bike TÜV inspector

The Successful search for a custom bike TÜV inspector

Today is the 2nd of December 2020. I have started my search for a custom bike TÜV inspector for the BMW project.

Why do you need a TÜV inspector for your custom bike?

In Germany, you must know, the regulations for custom bikes are pretty strict. Every motorized vehicle needs to be approved by the TÜV (Technical Inspection Association) every two years. They check for safety and environmental problems. If you don’t pass, you are not to drive or ride it on the street.

And since we are in Germany and there are many weird rules about everything, it’s better to discuss such a project before you start. Otherwise you might find out, that your indicators are only 22,1 cm apart and not the required 24 cm. Or that the exhaust you have built in meticulous handcraft is 0,5 dB louder than allowed.

And we obviously don’t want that. So, I try to find a TÜV inspector who likes motorcycles and projects like this. Because a random, unmotivated inspectors might end your project before you have even touched the first screw.

I’ve got a contact

Luckily, we have some well-connected guys at our workshop (Spree Coast Customs). One of them knows a motorcycle friendly TÜV inspector. The first step is done: I have a contact. I will call the inspector to make an appointment.

I reached him at 2 pm today. Seems like he is the right guy for the job, but he was super busy, so he asked me to call him back after 30 minutes. Unfortunately, I couldn’t reach him anymore today. I’ll try again tomorrow.

Now it is already the 05th of December. I’ve called him every day but couldn’t get hold of him. I now shot him a message to see if at least we can schedule a call. Let’s see if he gets back to me. If not, I guess I need to find another TÜV inspector. I’ll get back to it on Monday (the 7th of December). Wish me luck!

My goal is to have the project discussed before the 20th of December (when I will leave for my Christmas holidays). That’s important so I can order parts in the first week of 2021. Which is necessary to keep the loose timeline. Which looks like this:

  • Have the project approved by the TÜV until the 20th of December
  • Connect with sponsors until the end of 2020

I got lucky

Yeeeees!! This morning I got very lucky. It is Monday the 7th of December 2020. First thing in the morning I called the TÜV inspector again. No luck. But then I called him again just before my university course started at 12 pm. First, I didn’t reach him but then I got a call back and now I have a meeting set up for Thursday. I’m super happy. The TÜV inspector seems to be very keen for projects like this. This was one of the tasks I was most anxious about but now I’m actually looking forward to the appointment with the TÜV. It’s the first time in my life :D.
I will keep you updated.

Have a great day and – Wrench On!
